Mentorship

There are two types of mentors: the faculty research mentor and the faculty mentor. Both work closely with the student from inception of the proposal to completion of the research project. The summer seminar is taught by a core group of faculty mentors, any of whom may serve as research mentors. Although it is not required for student and mentor to be working in the same discipline, it is highly desirable. Please note typical mentor/student relationships:
The mentor provides support with developing the research project
The mentor assists with setting realistic goals to complete the research project
The mentor encourages critical thinking about the research project
The mentor explores options relative to graduate school
The mentor explores potential career options
The Ronald E McNair program is managed through a collaborative relationship between program staff and faculty mentors. Faculty mentors play a significant role in designing the research and scholarly activities through two committees: Mentor Advisory and the Curriculum Development.
